Expanding underground space as an academic field: TUST journal experience

TIME & LOCATION

Nov 25, 2025   9:30-12:00

Room 322, School of Transportation

INTRODUCTION

The talk will trace the global evolution of underground-space research and explain how the discipline has shifted from pure construction toward resource utilization, urban resilience, safety assurance, low-carbon solutions, and intelligent technologies. Drawing on editorial experience with the leading journal Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology (TUST), the speaker will highlight what makes high-impact papers in this field—covering topic selection, research questions, theoretical contribution, methodological innovation, and manuscript structure—and offer practical advice on maximizing academic influence and international visibility. The session is designed to help researchers and graduate students grasp the discipline’s future directions, understand quality benchmarks, and craft effective submission strategies, ultimately strengthening China’s participation in worldwide underground-space debates and frontiers.

ABOUT THE LECTURER

Dr. Bobylev is an internationally recognized scholar in underground space and urban environments. His work on urbanisation, sustainable development, urban infrastructure, environmental assessment and multi-criteria decision analysis has yielded outstanding academic contributions and broad global impact. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and ranks among the world’s leading researchers in “UUS” and “UUI” (5th and 1st worldwide over the past decade, respectively, and 2nd in “UUS” over the past five years). His Scopus h-index of 15 far exceeds the field average.Beyond theory, Dr. Bobylev actively translates research into practice. In 2005 he helped draft the Saint Petersburg Urban Development Plan (2015–2025), the first city strategy to embed an underground-space component. He has since served repeatedly as an expert adviser to UNECE, UN-Habitat and the World Bank, providing continuous support for global urban-sustainability and environmental policies.Funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, he has led or participated in numerous international projects. He convenes the ITA Underground Environment Working Group, co-chairs its Sustainable Development Committee, and lectures for ITACET. As Associate Editor of the leading journal Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology (Elsevier), he plays a pivotal role in advancing the discipline and fostering scholarly exchange.
